He was born on June 30, 1917 in Marshfield, Missouri and enlisted to the military on July 11, 1917 at MB, Mare Island, California until August 13, 1919 at MB, Quantico, Virginia. He was awarded the distinguished service cross for his service in the Bois De Belleau or Battle of Belleau Wood near the Marne River in France.&#160;</p>
