Marshall worked in St. Louis, Missouri at the Medical Supply Depot as a temporary unskilled laborer during World War I. He was appointed on May 26, 1917. Prior to this he worked for the Quartermaster Department and served in the 25th Infantry from 1900 to 1903.&#160;</p>
