(copy) From: - The General Officer Commanding-in Chief, The British Forces in Italy To:- The Commissioner, American Red Cross, Vicenza. General Headquarters, 8th., June 1918. Sir:- I wish to express my deep appreciation of a most gallant action performed by Mr. Bayard Wharton, in saving the life of Lieutenant H.J. Watts, R.A.F., in the River Brenta, on the 24th May 1918. The total disregard of his personal safety, and the magnificent example which he showed in particularly trying circumstances, have inspired us all. His gallant conduct is being brought to the notice of the Higher Authorities in England. I wish also to bring to notice the gallant services rendered on this occasion by Lieutenant Chas. Walderspuhl and Volunteer John Cloud, Both of the American Red Cross. Will you be so good as to convey an expression of my thanks for the conspicuous services rendered by them. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your obedient Servant, Cavan, Lieut-General Com in Chief, British forces in Italy.
