A.E.F. [March] 10, 1918. Dear Strat, I have been intending to answer your letter for a long time but you know how easy it is to put such things off when one is busy. We have certainly been busy getting the company ready and then taking our turn in the trenches. I am with a machine gun company which is part of the

Rainbow Division and is an Ohio outfit. The personal of the company is very good. I never saw quite so much mud as when we were in the trenches. The sun shone one day and the rest of the time it either rained or snowed. The rats were there in force, too. they would run around and kick dirt thru the cracks in the ceiling of my dugout. I had a very good dugout, however, and enjoyed the first few

days very much. A very agreeable French Lieut was there with me for a couple of days and we became quite good friends. We took over a quiet sector from the French but it became more lively all the time. Our shooting seems to irratate the Boche for their artillery became rather active at times.
