[November] 10 1918 Dear Virginia- I received four letters from you in about ten days, but I have not received the pictures you sent I am sorry to say. I was not gassed, but was only sick. I stated that very carefully in my letters, but my folks imagined all sorts of things because I was at the front. I wrote to you about four or five days ago and will write again soon and try to make up for lost time. It is Sunday now, I am down town in Paris. I just ate three fried eggs the first that I have had since April when I was in the States. Our Hospital was bombed [September] 15, but no one was hurt. Four successive bombs were dropped the closest falling about 200 feet from tents where there were wounded soldiers. Some of the windows in the main office

were shattered from the concussion. My company is still at the front facing the music, which I am in Paris on detached duty. I am the fireman at the hospital. I have a big boiler to keep water hot with About all that I have to do is to watch the hot water gauge and throw in a shovel of coal now and then. I almost laughed myself sick when you wrote about Mr Powell refusing to close High School, when ordered to do so His conceit is the typical colossal conceit of a man very much developed in one way- books, and wholly lacking in many others. Will write to you again in a few days and will try to write a more newsy letter Sincerely, Your friend Pvt. Harris Heard Am. R.C.M.H. No 5 Am E.F. APO 702 Paris France
