[August] 4, 1918 Dear Virginia: I am addressing this letter in my mother

[page 2] barracks bags are also packed We may leave anytime now. We are also having gas mask drill now. I understand that we get to ride to the front in real railroad cars- American coaches. The whistle on a French locomotive sounds like a whistle on a peanut stand. The funny little coaches run on four wheels and are so small that they remind me of an American dry-goods box. We are paid in French money. It reminds me of American soap-wrappers.

[page 3] I wrote to you previously, and I hope that you have by this time heard from me I sent you a couple of personal post-card pictures of myself taken in France I hope that you received them. I am writing this letter hastily, but will write a longer one next time. I work every day, Sunday included, and every night also. Hoping to hear from you soon. Your friend, Pvt.
