Did you get my Christmas letter? I remember writeing it but I dont recollect mailing it. I am very sorry Frank, that I did not get you a German helmet, there are only 2 places that I know of where they could be found, In the rear area, away back, and in captured territory. They were very plentiful in the territory we took [September] 26 to [October] 2, but now comes the draw bac, when a fellow is ducking High Explosives and shrapnel and trying to out fun Gas at the same time

beleive me he cant be bothered with any extra baggage. While the war was on, a fellow could buy them at a reasonable price if he got as far back as the S.O.S, how they got back there beats me, unless they took them from prisoners, but since the armistice has been signed you cant buy them for love or money, unless you run into a lad that has been with the advance party of the Army of Occupation. I had both my arms chuck full of small souvenirs when we were releived but somehow they all dissapeared we got a bunch of sticky fingerd dudes in the outfit, However I still have 2 pieces of German paper money left, and I

Meier wrote his cousin-in-law Frank Baebler, also of Saint Louis, several humorous letters during the War. In this letter ,Meier described military life and why he was unable to get a German helmet. |
