Mrs N.H. Beauregard [November] 13 1918 Missouri Historical Society Jefferson Memorial _City Dear Nettie Last May I sent coppies of the inclosed article-(This War) to several news papers and several magazines and requested them to publish it, thinking that it would help to popularize the thoughts that would put a stop to the horrible war. none of them published the article. Two of them wrote me that the article was pro german and for that reason they would not publish it. I sent a coppy of the article to the President of the U.S. and requested him to send it to the Kayser of Germany saying in the letter that if it reached the Kayser it might influence him to see the adviseability of asking for an armistice. In compliance with my promise to mail the inclosed article to you I do so. Do with it what you think adviseable. If it had been printed by the papers or magazines the publications would be of historical interest to keep but as it was not it looks to me as though the article has little historical interest Yours affectionately Uncle J Charles Cabanne

St. Louis, Missouri, May 28, 1918. This War. This war is a war between National Autocracy and Democracy. National Patriotism as it has been, teaches the advisability of the National selfishness. The National Patriotic ideals that have built up National Autocracies have been for the individual to make every effort he or she could do to make their country the conqueror. The ideals of nationalism as they have been, taches the individual the advisability of national selfishness. The result has been and is, that the individual thinks that the best thing for my country is, My Country First, and the balance of the world second. Its teachings have resulted in making a nation desire to add to its territory and for the betterment of mankind to conquer the world. In making one nation hate another nation. In making one nation envious and jealous of some other nation. In making one nation fear some other nation. The outcome of which is this destructive war. The cure for this horriable disease of the body politic of our world is for democracy to win in this war. The Patriotic Ideals of democracy advocate a union of the nations of the world, because it will put a stop to nation wars. The most important and encouraging factor that has come into this war since it started is that the United States has gone into it, which means that with our allies we will conquer Germany and Austria. It places Woodrow Wilson, being the president of the United States, in the place where he will and can do more than any other man to organize a league of the nations at war to agree upon a plan to put a stop to the war. We must and will win by this fall. It is a war to save mankind from the despotism of national military autocracy. IT is a war against autocratic military Germany. Why will Democracy? Because Democracy is growing so fast and powerful. One hundred and fifty years ago democracy was in its infancy. To-day and half of the people in our world are governed by democratic governments. The result of which is that the military autocracy of Germany and her allies are outnumbered in soldiers by the Entente allies, and also because the entente allies are many times richer, and also because the imperial German Government has developed such an opposition to international justice and good will that the imperial German Government must be overcome if international good will is ever to prevail which will bring more countries into the war against Germany. The Germans and her allies will soon be stopped in their western drive, and the Germans will see that the unity and enthusiasm of the people of the United States who have joined the entente allies means victory for the entente allies because the United States is now three times richer in resourses than Germany. The United States is in this war to stay until Democracy in this struggle against the national autocracy of Germany is successful. The Kaiser and the men associated with him in the government of Germany are so intensely patriotic and love Germany so much, that they will do whatever they think is the best thing for their country even if it is to turn Germany into a democracy. Now is the time for them to see the advisability of bringing about a conference of the warring nations to put a stop to the war as soon as possible, and to do it they should come forward and say to the entente allies
