[page 2] led to Paris. All north and south traffic had to pass over these two lines as long as Amiens ceased to be useful as a railroad center, In order to take care of this added traffic if Amiens be lost, the line from Longpre to Gamaches was double-tracked. This line was built as a Military Railway during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, and now fifty years later it is being again used for the same purpose. Under the supervision of the Fourth Canadian Railway Troops, the First Battalion started the excavation of the new road bed at the northern end of the line from Airaines to Bettencourt, near Longpre; a distance of three miles Seventeen days later, the laying of steel commenced. About this time the enemy pressure at Amiens was showing signs of letting up, and the necessity that caused the road to be built ceased to exist other than as a precaution; and, so the delivery of steel and ties was delayed. About May twentieth practically all the steel was laid from Bettencourt to Airaines; from May twentieth to June first was spent in trimming slopes and lowering grades on old line to take care of overhead bridge at Bettencourt. To be continued in next edition. Lieut. John J? Callahan, 12th Engineers, N.A., In Field, France. May 25, 1918.
