G-3/6. Headquarters 28th Division American Expeditionary Force France. 22 October, 1918. Daily Operations Report From noon 21 [October], to noon 22 [October], 1918. I. Hostile Situation at beginning of day. Unchanged II. Information received of enemy during day. Usual movement of small groups of the enemy seen in the vicinity of 366.3-245.5 and 361.3-246.7. III. Hostile movement and conduct during day. (a) Infantry. Several carrying parties observed entering the Bois de Dommartin. Some increase noted in the use of machine guns and one-pounders on our patrols. (b) Artillery: During the day intermittant harrassing fire on Thiaucourt, Xammes, Charey and Jaulny. During the night scattered retaliation fire on our right sub-sector. From 23:00 to 24:00 hour, intensity of all fire increased on towns of Xammes, Jaulny and Thiaucourt. Decrease in use of gas shells noted. (c) Aeronautics: Marked increase noted during entire period. In right sub-sector 73 bombs dropped during period, most of which fell in vicinity of Thiaucourt, Xammes and the road running cast from Thiaucourt. One bomb dropped on the right flank of left sub-sector. Three enemy balloons observed inascension during the day in the vicinity of St. Julien, Sampvitoux and Dommartin. (d) Movements: see Intelligence Report. IV. Maps Illustrating the Above. None V. Own Situation at beginning of day. Unchanged. VI. Own Changes, Movements and Action during day. (a) Infantry: In left sub-sector, two strong raiding parties left our lines at 1:30 hour, one moving north to Aviation Park and one to Bois de Dommartin, and returned at 2:30 hour capturing 27 prisoners and suffering no casualties. In the right sub-sector, patrol on extreme right gained objective, but no enemy encountered. Heavy enemy barrage and machine gun fire compelled patrol to withdraw to our lines after suffering casualties. (b) Artillery : Usual harrassing fire during day on enemy lines and known sensitive points. Increased activity during night in support of Infantry raids. (c) Aeronautics: Three balloons observed in ascension during afternoon; four reconnaissance planes observed over our lines during period. (d) Movements: No movement of troops other than that of Infantry patrols, working parties and supply parties. (e) Work done by Command: 109th Machine Gun Battalion completed 12 machine gun emplacements during night in entire sector. Work continued on all positions already established. VII. Information received of neighboring units. None. VIII. Orders received. G.O., 194, IVth Corps. IX. Maps Illustrating the Above. None.
