Description
Mothers of enlisted persons proudly displayed these blue star banners in their homes and windows. Each blue star indicates one family member in the service, silver stars symbolized the wounded, and gold stars were used to memorialize dead soldiers.

Description
State service flag for the state of Missouri. Missouri had 156,232 men serve and 4,470 die in the service. In the 1920s, the Missouri Legislature wanted to honor the state’s veterans of the Great War. They appropriated money to match that raised by individual counties to create Service Banners representing the servicemen and women from each county. In 1924, sixty-eight counties presented banners to the state. Over the next two decades, several more were presented. Today the banners in the Missouri State Museum’s collection represent ninety-eight counties plus the City of St. Louis.
