Copy of letter from Lieut Joseph S. Guppy, 369th Regiment Infantry colored to Elizabeth C. Allen, Peirce City Missouri. 52 Stratford Road Melrose [Massachusetts] 6th March 1919. My dear Miss Allen, You were a very dear friend of Lieut E.A.Mc Nish I know, and it is with the greayest admiration, that I recall him as one of my best friends and comrades, besides being the finest and bravest of soldiers I ever knew. We both joined the 369th Infantry on the 1st of August 1918 and he, undoubtedly has written to you of his experiences up until September 26th, but probably failing to mention how he was cited for bravery displayed in the only raid conducted by the 369th, and again how he was mentioned in orders for capturing two Bosche prisoners while out on patrol. On September 26th, the final drive started and the Regiment was in line about three miles Southwest of a small town called Ville sur Tourbe, which is just about one half way on a line between Reims and Verdun. For three days our Battalion was in reserve and on the 29th it constituted the first wave of advance. It captured a village named
