France April 15 - 1918 Dearest Sweetheart That seems to me the only term that I can call you, my beautiful wife, that expresses my feelings to you on this your birthday, which you may be sure I have not forgotten, and within you will find my gift a wild French rose, which I walked and walked until I found and which under the circumstances is all I can enclose. A Rose to a Rose This will be only a temporary present as it is my entention to purchase some of the beautiful French lace and bring home with me when I come. I am kissing this little flower as I know you will do that very same thing and you can

This is rather a sentimental letter but I am lonesome for you and just want to pour out a heart full of love to you. This letter is for you only. All your very own. Your picture is at my elbow and even our dear little girls is not in sight. This, I feel is your day alone. Though I should not make her feel badly by reading this part to her. All the rest of my letters are for she and you together but this is yours. You know, sweet, there is just one love for a wife and that is all I have room for

Am thinking back a good many years tonight remembering the many sweet moments and hours of our courting days and happy married years and just praying that I can be spared entact and well to finish life with you and die at an old age at the same moment that you do. You cannot realize how fortunate the women of America are in the small proportion of her men who are at the front. Here, whole villages have every able bodief man gone, some dead, some prisoners and some still fighting. It is just a nation in arms, the bravest, truest, and kindlest people that one
