[page 2] of course, not having been on the big pond before, it seemed to me it was fairly rough. It seems we cannot send post cards or anything which might disclose our exact whereabouts but I shall get them wherever I get a chance and save to bring home I have some of this place which show some of the quaint customs and places about here. Expect to be permitted to go to town tomorrow and will try to purchase some little thing distinctive of this place and bring home. With the restriction on writing it is going to be difficult to find much to write about but I shall write if I can

[page 4] there seem to be plenty of them, if it were not for the mourning seen on the woman, one would not know there was a war on within thousands of miles. The sight in the harbor through which we entered France is a beautiful sight, with all kinds of shiping in sight from sail boats to the largest of transports. For the first time I saw four mast sailing vessels and it is a source of wonder to me how they can work a ship with the amount of ropes and spars they have on the boats. You must be sure to write me as often as you possibly can, as that is the only anchor to which I can hold until I see you again my sweethearts With all the love of my heart Husband & Father Ernest O.K.
