[Y.M.C.A. letterhead] Camp A A HUMPHREYS Virginia My Sweethearts August 29 [1918] I arrived safe and sound last night after a tiresome journey which was without incident except for the stops at Chicago and Washington. My stop in Chicago was probably very profatable as I had three hours and Mr Byrne introduced me to all the big ones who were in Chicago and they were extremely nice to me and were very much interested in my trip over there and were proud, or seemed to be, at my chances for promotion. Then, when I reached Washington I met the rest of them except the Pres. Mr Wooley. the first Vice Pres (the second biggest man in the

[page 2] Company said he wanted to assure me that they expected to have something nice for me when the mess is over and I am to go to Chicago and see them when I am through with this task. Our promotion have not reached here as yet but our luck is still holding and I was immediately made Battalion Commander, the only one from those who came back with me and there seem to be no sour grapes as all the other profess to be glad to serve under me. There seem to be no suitable places to bring you to and it is my opinion that at the end of a month or so that I will be transferred to some other camp with a perminant command, however I shall look the situation over more carefully after having been here a few days and can then tell more about it. I surely hate to be separated from you that long but also hate to bring you all the way out here in this hot hot weather, for only a short time, however if you care to come very much will try to locate something in

[page 4] Washington which is only 17 miles away and I could come up for over Sunday the AR Co manager at [Washington] says his whole force is at our disposal to try to locate something to live in. I found that, owing to my not having gotten my pay voucher in by the 20th that I can not get paid until about the 15th hence the telegram for money which I will pay back when mine comes. In this position I did not want to be at a disadvantage and I have $3.20 which I submit is a slight disadvantage. Was not much impressed with Chicago and was disappointed at [Washington] though the Govt bldgs. are wonderful. Was entertained at lunch, at the most exclusive hotel there, by the Vice Pres, Secratay, the private secretary of the Pres, and one of the largest stockholders, a
