[page 1] FRANCE JULY 21 [1918] MY SWEET LITTLE DAUGHTER I WAS SO VERY MUCH PLEASED TO GET THE LETTER YOU WROTE MAY 22ND DEAR LITTLE HEART, I KNOW YOU ARE LONESOME FOR ME BUT NOT MORE SO THAN I AM FOR YOU. YOU MUST LET MOTHER ACT AS BOTH MOTHER AND FATHER UNTIL I GET BACK TO YOU, ALSO YOU WILL HAVE TO LOVE HER FOR YOURSELF AND ALSO FOR FATHER. NO, SWEET, I WAS NOT SICK ON THE BOAT BUT SOME OF THEM WERE, ESPECIALLY CUNNINGHAM. AM GLAD TO KNOW THAT YOU ARE IN SCHOOL AGAIN. THOUGH COME TO THINK OF IT, YOU ARE PROBABLY

THERE IS NO USE IN YOUR TELLING ME THAT YOU ARE NOT SMART, AS I HAPPEN TO KNOW THAT YOUR LITTLE BRAIN IS AS KEEN AS ANY ONES OF YOUR AGE. WHILE IN THE ARMY I HAVE LEARNED SEVERAL EXERCISES THAT I SHALL TEACH YOU AND THEY WILL STRENGTHEN AND MAKE YOU STRONG. I SHOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF I SHOULD SEE YOU SOON, THOUGH I AM NOT SURE JUST YET AND DON
