McGee, Eleanor Collection
Eleanor McGee, a resident of Kansas City, Mo., served with the American Red Cross at Base Hospital No. 23 in Vittel, France during World War I. The hospital was organized in January 1917 and was fully operational from January 1918 through February 1919. It was part of a larger medical center at Vittel and cared for over 11,000 patients throughout the war.
McGee recorded the names and addresses of wounded American soldiers under her care. Her notebooks include comments on their condition and letters to their family. Mementos crafted by German Prisoners of War are also included in this collection.
