#86 Bellevue (S & O.) June 8 1919. Dear Louis - Your #b reaches me today. Just returned to the school after traveling around since last [Wednesday]. Simpson and I made as study trip through Chantilly – Senlis - Melun – Sens – Troyes (so many names to you if you do not locate them on the map.) Made quite a number of sketches. It would be a long story to detail the trip – which runs similiar to the others. Saw & sketched some wonderful chateaus and lots of old Cathedrals. Went so far as to ride in an old cow wagon for 6 kilometers to see Chateau Veaux – le Vicort which wouldn’t be so bad if the cow had been sociable. Simpson was in the front end and I the rear. Be damned if the old cow

[page 2] didnt – all over the place! Bummed some milk and “petite paws” from the farmers. But its a hard life – this sketching & run for the train. No M.P’s – nor C.T.O. just go where you please – Mare will know what that means. Metro is tied up in Paris so we ride to the Stations in trucks. I have not received Mare’s letter as yet – glad to hear he is now with you and hope he may get back into the swing of “lits”. the real dope is: that the school closes the 15th of June. that we sail the 26th or there abouts. that my old outfit the 29th [Engineers] also sails this month – parades in Washington D.C. that I am very glad to be able to stay away from them and can go home in the student

[page 4] More good luck. We have quite an exhibition of sketches in which I am well represented. A little pencil sketch – “Temple d’Amour” that I did attracted the attention of a [New York] Society worker who wished to advance some thing towards the traveling fund. She gave me 100 [francs] which gives me the snug sum of 600 [francs]. this exhibition is going to travel all over the States so it is likely you may see it. at any rate the drawings are to be returned to us. I take pleasure in stating that the prof. in charge has placed me “paramount” in sketching and out door observation. In design I fall to 4th or 5th place. Which is not so bad considering the number of old sharks at the game we have here.

[page 5] this same gent is recommending me for a foreign scholarship of 1 year abroad – but of this I cannot say any thing as yet. I confess to being tired out and sick of the army (as we are now made to release that we are still in it). In seeing the French troops remobilized in anticipation of further trouble and preparation for advance in the Rhine Land. (You must keep still about this) I shall be glad to get home. At any rate the early part of July should see me there. As to the uniform you have so kindly offered – heaven forbid! I am so sick of these rags that I hope to get some honest to goodness clothes the same day – they can me.
