[October] 29, [1918] Dear Folks – I wrote you last on [October] 20 and since have traveled much landing at a post not so far from the one I left before going to the hospital. On Monday morning the 21st at Post #733 “fall in” was already given for the 1st formation (sidearm & rifles) – when a telegram reached the top sergeant addressed to me. He dismissed me and gave me the telegram which stated I should report to Tours for examination. Capt. Swetser arranged so that a truck took me & my pack down to the station. (Very good of him indeed). So this completed a six week course of combatant training and I found myself in fine physical trim. On the way we passed some civilian camps and some of the fliers flew low enough along with the train to wave at us. Train service is poor and irregular so I reached Tours after midnight and slept in the station. The following day about fifty of us presented ourselves for examination for commission of 2nd Lieut. in the engineers. The examination was not difficult and in the course of a month or so I shall know what success Ive had. - Remained in this town four days in which time I visited some of the points of architectural interest.

Also had a couple of days in Paris again, in which time I visited “Versailles,” and spent a half day in the interiors. It certainly is a wonder. From there I returned to my former post and remained but a day – only to be shipped at the present location. At the post (#714) I found my former company among whom were Lesly Simpson and Ray Herbert. We are very comfortably located here (for the winter if needs be). So you see I am back with my original company having traveled to the coast and back again in the zone of advance. I have been in three hospitals – a conicelesent camp – a rest camp – a classification camp – and the Engineers training camp since I left #706 the early part of August. On the way I had some photo – post cards made which I shall send you as soon as they reach me. But – for heavens sake don’t let any more pictures or letters get to the press! Ray showed me a clipping from a St. Louis paper with the letter I wrote you about our furlough. Must admit it displeased me much for no letter that I write off hand is fit for publication even though corrected. I sincerely hope you will prevent a repetition of this. Inclosed is my “Xmas package coupon” which may reach you too late. Note that

the package must be sent before [November] 20, [1918]. If not too late I will appreciate some “sweets.” Unfortunately being a casual and returning after so long an absence I was unable to get it off sooner. If too late I appreciate your good intentions. “Ce la guerre!” Briefly, this is the history of the week ending [August] 27 and now I am located permanently with Co. “H” – 29th Enginers. No mail from the States reached me during the last two months. I hope you may have received most of the letters I wrote you. Am writing to few in the States as no mail has reached me for some time. Again, I ask that you do not release home letters for unfortunately I never take time to reread them and carelessly scratch all that comes to my mine. – Also, do not be too sure of the promotion for there is equal chance for failure. Read some interesting letters on St. Louis by Dean Longsdorf of the University. In hopes of hearing from you soon with regards to all. Sincerely [George] Maguolo Co. H. 29th Engineers A. P.
