November 25, 1917 (Sunday Eve) Dear Folks - Just arrived here eight oclock this (Sunday Evening) and have had a most enjoyable trip. I left the Barracks noon Friday and caught the five o’clock New York train at the Union Depot. So much has happened between now and then that I can but give you a smattering in this letter. Enclosed is a map showing the route I (for I am alone) took. The heavy black line shows the route. At Indianapolis I had an hour and the same in Cleveland. At Buffalo I had a short stay. When I reached Albany we changed trains and this gave me

[page 2] all morning. At Worcester (pronounced) Wuster) I again changed trains to Ayer where I am putting up for the night at this new Hotel which opened Saturday night. In the morning I shall go to Camp Devens which is a short distance north of here and I shall have company for at the Hotel are some of the fellows detailed for the same division. they are college men so probably it is select company. these New Englander’s are a peculiar but very friendly people and have treated me nicely. there is something different about their speech, habits and even [architecture]

I wish you would keep all the material in the grip together, and mail me the list (typewritten) addresses together with a card which you will find in the lower or upper right hand drawer of my desk as follows: H. F. E. [ms illegible: 1 wd] Mechanical Engineer - [New York] Six inches of snow in Ohio and Western New York but none here. However, cold spells something different here from what I evr knew. Maguolo was in the 419th Depot Detachment, 25th Engineers and served in France with the 29th Engineers until 1919. In this letter he described his trip to the east coast on a special detail with several other soldiers. This letter was written on Hotel Debens, Ayer, Massachusetts, letterhead. |
