Camp Mills [Long Island, New York] July 15, 1919. Dear Folks - Suppose you have received my card stating my arrival to the States. We were treated very well indeed by the welfare organizations and finally lodged out here in the most miserable section of the camp – no water. Long & distant chow lines with miserable chow. Having spent a long two weeks on board ship and sick most of the time I am not wholly recovered and do well to get away with one meal a day – thank heaven for the Y.M.C.A. Hostess house here. the pack carrying days are over – and in this hot weather that is a wonderful conselation Perhaps Mare knows something of this neck–o-the land. Also he may say something for the life of a casual. So much for my present standing.

[page 2] On thursday 18th I am to receive a discharge from this post. Free to go home from here as a man. We will receive all necessary expense of course. If I can recover fast enough am expecting to spend 5 days in New York City (with Pancani most likely). After that the Chapin’s of Boston are sending me R.R. fare and I shall probably spend a week there. Lots of good times at both places of course – providing I am not all together “in” before receiving the red chevron. So do not expect to see me before the end of July – at which time (or before in case of change in plans) I shall notify you by telegram the exact time of arrival in St. Louis.

[page 3] this morning I discovered that Simpson & Herbert (with the Bellevue casuals) are also here and will be discharged thursday. this afternoon who should pipe up from a long straggling line of casuals but Ray Linikuehlu! Upon saluting a Capt. I suddenly recognized him as Jack Batchy – a school mate of mine. So we shall dine together this eve. Our entire equipment will be taken from us here so I shall arrive with only a musette bag – praise be to the Lord! Shall express a barrack bag with what junk I may keep. Probably you received my little trunk by now – and odd packages #16 and X-VIII (inc).

[page 4] I noticed that the [Y.M.C.A.] papers wrote an editorial on the conditions of our ship – “Pretoria” – but it was not half strong enough. You never saw the like of it – under our flag. Will tell you about it some time. And let me here say that I received quite a shock upon learning the prices of things over here! Send me back to Belgium. No use to continue with this pen (borrowed) so I close with high hopes for its the last lap and “Willie” gets the red chevron shortly. Sincerely George
