[page 1] “Moved again” in France February 21, 1918. Dear Folks – It seems as though I have reached a permanent quarters at last. Am now located at the General Headquarters and saw General [John] Pershing yesterday. Ray Herbert is still with me and we work in the same office at topographical drafting. Very interesting work indeed. Wish I could tell you more. It is useless for me to repeat that I am well and contented. Our meals are very good. You will be surprised to learn that I am the first to arise each morning in our “billet” to light the fire. This was hardly the case at home. to make things comfortably for washing. I

[page 2] get a large (gallon) tomato can from the kitchen. to this I fastined a hay wire handle. By filling the bucket each evening and heating it on the stove I manage to get a warm wash each morning to have warm showers in the camp so don’t fear about my getting an occasional bath. Ray and I are aquainted with a family in a near by town. We manage to get here once in a while and learn some French. the kind we had at school has given us a good start for we understand most every thing and manage to express ourselves. Am still in hopes that my Italian will land me a position sometime. It would certainly be a treat to visit Italy and I have

[page 3] hopes that my technical education, and ability at sketching combined with the Italian will some day prove of value there. Am still a private, although I believe there is little chance for advancement I continue working hard and doing all to the best of my ability. So should I return a private, I shall at least have the satisfaction of knowing that I have done my duty. One thing sure, I continue to lead a clean life and am trying to uphold all the good that has been taught me. Have seen more of this French architecture and the more I see the more I wish to visit Italy. The people have certainly a taste for ornament which we lack. Ray

Birthday) so I am in hopes of hearing from you. It will be the first mail. guess the shop is running O.K. allthough work is slack. | Description | George J. Maguolo wrote a letter to his parents on February 21, 1918 while in France. Maguolo was in the 447th Depot Detachment, 25th Engineers and served in the 29th Engineers in France until 1919. In this letter he explained that he was assigned to General Headquarters and that he got to see General John Pershing who recently visited the facilities. This letter was written on Y.M.C.A. letterhead. |
