France - April 7, [1918] Dear Folks – My letters from abroad – date as follows – [January] 31 [February] 5 [February] 9 [February] 16 [February] 21 [February] 27 [March] 4 [March] 7 [March] 14 [March] 20 I have not heard from you as yet and hardly expect to for letters are scarce in my present location. At present I am in the lines and have already had a touch of war. Really believe I could write a book on what had happened since my last letter. Of course, I am allowed to say but very little. One thing sure I never had any idea what an “attack” really was. Have some interesting “souvenirs” that I hope to take back. These consist of “Boshe”

equipment. certainly I have seen things that I can never forget. After a month at the front, you will probably be glad to hear that next week I should return to Headquarters, safely behind the lines. I have worked hard on the subject I am interested to learn. Shall be an instructor upon my return but it would not surprise me if I received no advancement and remained a private. Not withstanding the part however, am receiving all the comforts of an officer and shall be contented to return to a quite spot for the remainder of the war. Shall write you more regular then and hope to receive a bunch of mail there. Surely some one has written me for it is now over three months that I have received no mail. Useless to say am in excellent health and more contented than ever with my present fortunes. Can imagine the war fires of the U.S. where few know little of what actually happens here. Under separate cover am sending you a sketch of myself made by a noted French artist.

take care of it. Am also sending a photo of myself taken when on a “leave” from the lines. This will probably come through the French Mails. Have heard or seen nothing of America and suppose he probably is on his way over here. Often think of home and the shop. Hope all may be well and the work advancing. You now have no reason to worry about me for I am (or will be by the time this letter reaches you) in a safe little studio. With love for all Sincerely [Private] George Maguolo 447th Engineers Verdun
