[page 1] April 27 [1918] Dear Folks - My note book shows I have not written you since April 18. I have not received any letters from you since that date. Several interesting things have happened, the most important of which is my recent promotion. Have been made a corporal (hm!). This means that I wear two stripes [sketch of corporal rank] and am paid $40.00 per. The greater advantage derived is that I am now out of the “multitude and therefore have a slightly better chance to advance. - - Am now an instructor along the lines I have studied while with the French.

This exam. reveiled that I have gained 11 lbs. while in the Army. My right eye is considerably weaker. Otherwise am healthier, and stronger all around than when I joined. [November] 19.

A work, I am very very fortunate to be teaching for it is something entirely new which will prove of immense value in peace times as well. (Of course I can tell you nothing of it for it is one of our (the allies) greatest secrets. Dont believe I told you of a package I received last week from a “Boston Friend.” A box weighing nearly ten lbs. &containing the following articles –
