Description In this extract of a special order issued by General John J. Pershing, Dr. Esther E. Leonard and two other contract surgeons were ordered to report to duty from their respective hospitals in France. Dr. Leonard served as a contract surgeon during World War I at the U.S. Army General Hospital No. 1 in New York City and at an evacuation hospital in Vichy, France.
