James Kellogg Burnham Hockaday letter to Aunt Jessie - n.d.
Transcript
[354th Infantry letterhead] My Dear Aunt Jessie: - I am at last on the sea. Believe me but this air is wonderful. It reminds me of Quogue. I never felt better after I got over my first spell of sea sickness. You don’t know how much I enjoyed that book you gave me. It was one of the most exciting I have read. I believe I finished it in one day. I have also read some other books. There is a small library on the ship. When we were at the pier we were given hot coffee and wonderful raisin buns by some Red Cross ladies. They were certainly angels of mercy for the men had had no breakfast. Give my love to Uncle Frank.

[354th Infantry letterhead] Much love to you and Jessie. I hope Mother will not worry any. It would make me feel happy if everyone would feel happy and proud of my going. I shall have to close now, as time is growing short. Much love to everyone and you. Burnham. J. K. B. Hockaday 1st Lieut., 354th Inf. American Expeditionary Forces.
