France - March 7/1918 - Mother dear - A letter from you coming today - I am not going to wait until Sunday to answer it. Perhaps my letters to you are coming through the same as do those from home in driblets and no order at all. I have now received from you the following - in the following order - letters dated January 12, 2, undated, 29, 16, 1 from Elizabeth) - and the 20th - Also - I want to acknowledge the receipt of a pair of "kneelets" and a very, very, superior pair of driving gloves. My very best "thank you" for them both. They are mighty fine and mighty. Mrs. Russell (wonder if I am growing too

old to call her Iola?) sent me two packages of knitted things and a cloth checkerboard which I have enjoyed on convoy. It was dear of her to do so. Emmet has written me two or three letters as well. "The mills of the gods" - etc - at last the money order which I turned in to the French post office in October has been paid. March 6th - quick work. The money will come in mighty handy if I get another permission. So if Dad hasn't sent a duplicate please tell him not to trouble. Am afriad the warning comes a little late. Coburn Herndon is now an acting sergeant again - for which I am very glad - as he has had it coming for some time. We are still together and I hope will be.

Joe Travis - now 2nd Lt. Travis - has joined us with his outfit. It's rather amusing to meet the fraternity boys playing new roles. As you probably know - Joe went to a training school for officers several months ago. Don Scoles (whom you do not know) has a birthday Sunday and is giving a dinner to some of us by way of celebration. I bought the necessary for a cake and will have the cook make it. Think he will enjoy the surprise. Anyway - what is a birthday party minus a cake? The sale of candies and little cakes was prohibited March first - to our great sorrow. I purchased two small boxes
