Private J.E. Henschel American Mission MTD., A.E.F., Prov. Co. "B", Convois Autos Par B.C.M., France - March 18/1918 - Dearest Mother - Have been in receipt of yours of February fifth for some days, also of one that came later - enclosing a letter from E - Which quite turns the tables. Hence having missed Sunday's - I have two or three to write. But honestly - I have been working so hard that when night comes - I'm all ready to turn in. Please note the change in address - again - Coburn and I have been transferred to Liechew and Joe Travis' company as first sergeant and sergeant respectively. Coburn has not written this home yet. He did once - you know - and things all broke wrong for him - yet I think Mrs. Herndon and the Judge would be glad to hear of the

change. It certainly is a change, too. These boys are all in the draft from New York - most them ex-taxi cab artists. A few of them are "bad-actors" - a few more think that they are, but by far the great part are merely "wild and wooly ones" - most astonishingly lazy - but not very hard to manage. The most remarkable collection of detail dodgers and excuse exhibitors yet. So you can see that our particular job is more or less one of organization - that is - of teaching them their jobs. Still - it is real work and at times almost drives me [ms illegible: 1 wd]. If Cy and I can help the lieutenant to get the "old machine rolling" - I'll be more than satisfied - (Solve - he censors this). You can address my letters and the Star to

"Sergeant Ned" - for my warrant half probably have arrived by the time I hear from you in reply that is - provided I have not been "busted," by then. The weather has cleared up and I really believe that spring is with us again. Fine and warm; quite a relief from the colder winter days. (With which I hammer most zealously on the good wooden table). At any rate - the evenings are much more pleasant - long and light - the clock having been changed an hour. Friend Fritz is inclined to veto the pleasant part of that. Had a very nice letters from Marian W. It seems that she put herself in the hospital again. Also they seem to be having quite a winter. (Orders came in that broke into this - Love as always - Ned.
