Private J.E. Henschel - American Mission Motor Transport A.E.F. Reserve Mallet France - December 18/1917 - Dearest Mother - Today being your birthday, in heir of other remembrances. I am writing a letter. All the love in the world goes with this and only the very best of wishes - and many hopes that we may all be home together again at this season next year. The parcel containing the underwear arrived at last to my great joy and body - comfort. The package was rather "badly stayed with" (as we would say out here) but the contents were in excellent condition. Also about a dozen copies of the Star were delivered, which

has led me to hope for future deliveries now that they have my new address. (All the above in case last Sunday's letter fails of delivery). I hear from Paris that Seth is returning to the States - there being little that he could do over hear. Or better, there is not very much that they would let him do. Probably you have talked with him yourself by now, and so know all about it ("it" including lots of things) first hand. Si and I are still together and are going to try to be with one another all along - if possible. There have been so many changes and transfers that he and I are the only two of the Missouri unit left in this outfit. We have been

very fortunate in that respect at any rate. By the way, Si leaves on his first permission - or furlough as we must call it now - today or tomorrow. I am enclosing four calenders for the kiddies (who would probably assault me for calling them that). I blush at the price marks therein, but having no eraser I can not remove them. I don't know whether they will arrive in time for Merry Christmas, Happy New Year or Marry Returns - perhaps all of them. While "tres petite" and not at all costly - the best possible and "plus cher" of wishes go along with the booklets. Save for a continual cough (because of permanently wet feet) I am in very excellent health. A little while ago I nearly went on permanent repos by being between two colliding camions, but save

for being a bit lame for awhile, I suffered no serious damage. Almost all of us have colds or rheumatism, or both. (which is to be expected) so I have no kick coming. Also - since past few weeks, I have changed my mind about this being an "emburque" service - so you must not worry over a certain post letter. Christmas packages are beginning to come in, so that almost every night we have some bit of remembrance of the States around. One of the boys received an enormous box of Xmas candies - you know the kind - and joy has reigned in camp since. Mess call is sounding - so must close. Love as always - Ned. (It snowed some three or four inches - and so everything is covered deep today).
