Private J.E. Henschel. Motor Transport Corps - School #1 (APO 772) Am. Ex. Forces. Decize France - October 8th 1918. Dear Elizabeth - Don't you think I would make a fine school teacher? That's just what I am now. Teaching officers a lot about convoys that they don't want to know, and soldiers a lot they do, is my job now for the rest of the war. There is one thing nice though, perhaps sometime I may be sent back to the States to teach there. That would be fine - wouldn't it? (You see - I am such a wise fellow, and know so much - that they figure I am a lot more use back here than taking part in the war as a soldier. Perhaps they are right - who knows?) I have two letters from you - dated August 4th and 20th. Very sweet letters, both of them - showing that I libelled my sister when I said she did not write to me. I thought surely you would get all "E's" your first years - but they say over here "C'est la guerre which means - "it's all right, anyhow". Can't remember that my average nearly as that. Why don't you take French?

Suppose that you and Mary are both great big girls now - going to parties and all that. If ever I by some strange chance fall into the good graces of those high and mighties who give out commissions, I will be a little wealthier and send you both the scarves I admired so much in Paris. Just a trifle past my pocket-book at present - but some time perhaps. This is short - but it's late. A good-night hug and kiss and lots of love. Ned.
