1/4th Seaforth Highrs B.E.F. 30th March 1918 Lieut J. W. Hardesty U.S.M.S. Paris Dear Sir It is with much regret that I have to tell you that your brother Capt. J. F. Hardesty is a prisoner in hands of the Boche. On 22nd [ms illegible:1 wd] this battalion had to stand many heavy attacks by the enemy in the course of which they captured the trench in which your brother’s Aid Post was situated.

He had done exceptionally good work attending to large numbers of wounded men and showed great courage and devotion to duty in sticking to his post to the very end. When last seen he was unhurt and there is every chance that he is all right. He should not be long in Germany as I understand medical officers are exchanged quickly. Enclosed I send a number of letters which have arrived for him since he was captured. We also have a Valise with personal effects. What will

Description | John Franklin Hardesty entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps and volunteered to serve as a surgeon with the British Army during WWI. In March of 1918, he was captured by Germans in Amiens, France. Hardesty was imprisoned at Ratstatt and Villingen Prisoner of War Camps for eight months. In this letter M. Jobson, Major commanding 1/4 Seaforth Highlanders informed Lt. Joel W. Hardesty, U.S.M.S. of the prisoner of war status of his brother, Capt. John F. Hardesty. |
