THE DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY 51SR BATTN Army N. the Rheine Dear Hardesty I have as you see left the Seaforths & joined a Graduated (Boys) Bn of my own Reg! & a bad show compared with ones. His very dale one here in Cologne he I hope soon it will be over.

I will send you a histry of the 4th Seaforth's when it is rubbished as I believe it is to be. We had meant to do it ourselves but could not get the Records so I am afraid it will not be where we should like. I must give the devil his due and there is much to be said for the way the Bosche guns his country but of course one has to remember that wages are extraordinary now & we should not be content to have everything dare for us by the State. A farm laborer get 120 marks per annum & I wonder how

Description | John Franklin Hardesty entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps and volunteered to serve as a surgeon with the British Army during WWI. Hardesty corresponded with the men he was imprisoned with for many years after their release from prison. In March of 1918, he was captured by Germans in Amiens, France. Hardesty was imprisoned at Ratstatt and Villingen Prisoner of War Camps for eight months. This letter was written to Hardesty by someone in the Durham Light Infantry, 51st Battalion, Army of the Rhine. The writer mentioned his previous service with the Seaforth Highlanders which was the same British unit that Hardesty served in. |
