BOARD OF EDUCATION OF THE CITY OF ST. LOUIS DEPARTMENT OF INSTRUCTION April 25, 1918. Mr. Hardesty, Sr., Winfield, [Missouri] My dear Mr. Hardesty: This office is deeply interested in the welfare of your son, Dr. John F. Hardesty, who has a commission and has been in service with the Medical Reserve Corps, and has been reported as missing in France. Dr. Hardesty was connected with this department for sometime and left us to take up the work in the Medical Reserve Corps. He is held in very high esteem by the Board of Education officials and has many friends herein this city. I write to you to learn if you were officially notified of his being missing and if you have heard anything further. I extend my sympathy and sincerely hope that he is safe. Description | John Franklin Hardesty entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps and volunteered to serve as a surgeon with the British Army during WWI. In March of 1918, he was captured by Germans in Amiens, France. Hardesty was imprisoned at Ratstatt and Villingen Prisoner of War Camps for eight months. In this letter to Hardesty's father, James Stewart, Board of Education of the City of St. Louis, asked for information about Hardesty. |
