THE SPEAKER'S ROOMS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WASHINGTON, D.C. April 29th 1918 Miss Mary Lee Wilson Greeneville, [Mississippi] My dear Miss Wilson:- I am in the hospital and unable to go to the War Department and find what information they have received about Capt. Hardesty, but Speaker Clark has taken up the matter and I am enclosing a carbon copy of his letter to Adjutant General McCain. As soon as he hears from the General he will write to you direct. It is highly probable that Capt. Hardesty has been taken prisoner by the Germans and is unwounded as the doctors work in the first aid stations which are near the front trenches but are underground. THE SPEAKER'S ROOMS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WASHINGTON, D.C. killed his identification tag would have been found and the department would have reported his death. If he is a prisoner he will be exchanged in a month or two and will be none the worse for his experience. I am certain you will hear from, Speaker Clark in a few days. Description | John Franklin Hardesty entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps and volunteered to serve as a surgeon with the British Army during WWI. In March of 1918, he was captured by Germans in Amiens, France. Hardesty was imprisoned at Ratstatt and Villingen Prisoner of War Camps for eight months. In this letter, Clarence A. Cannon, House of Representatives, Washington, D.C., wrote to Mary Lee Wilson regarding Hardesty's prisoner of war status. |
