4th Battn. Seaforth Highrs B.E.F. France 15th April, 1918. Mrs. H. Chase Kelly, R.J. Box 49, Lincoln [Colorado] Winfield [Missouri] Dear Madam, In reply to your letter dated 16th April, 1918, I regret to inform you that your brother Captain John F. Hardesty, A.M.C., was reported as missing during operations 21 -26th March 1918. He was Medical Officer to my Unit and was along with Headquarters. During operations on the 23rd March our Headquarters was surrounded and although asked to retire he carried on with the wounded. When last seen he was all right and busily engaged tending to the wounded

We presume that he was taken prisoner and we hope that this is the case but I am sorry we can give nothing definite. Should this be the case he would be treated quit well, would act as Medical Officer to our boys and would probably be liberated soon. He is very much missed in the Battn as he was a very good Doctor and it is my earnest hope that he is quit safe. [signature] Captain 15th May, 1918 1/4th Seaforth Highlanders

Description | John Franklin Hardesty entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps and volunteered to serve as a surgeon with the British Army during WWI. In March of 1918, he was captured by Germans in Amiens, France. Hardesty was imprisoned at Ratstatt and Villingen Prisoner of War Camps for eight months. In this letter, the War Office, Victoria Embankment, relieved Hardesty of duty from the British Forces. |
