Madison [Wisconsin, January] 9, 1919 Prof. Th. Graebner, St. Louis, [Missouri] Dear Prof. Graebner, The Legislature has just convened. No bills have been introduced and no calendar published, so far as I have been able to learn. Today the Governor delivered his message. I enclose that portion of it which leans on the language questions. No radical legislation seems to be contemplated in the governor

Description Letter from Holden M. Olsen to Professor Theodore Graebner. Olsen informed Graebner that the legislature had convened, but nothing had been decided upon. Following World War I, anti-German sentiments rose across the county. Several states passed legislation forbidding the teaching of German in both public and private schools. The Lutheran Church was divided by the conflict on conducting services and religious instruction in German.
