Transcript

Norfolk, [Nebraska March] 11, 1919 Prof. Th. Graebner, St. Louis, [Missouri] Dear Prof. Graebner: The young people of our congregation are working hard to get an Assistant Pastor. We need a young man that is well versed in the English language, as that would be his main work. However, he should also be able to preach German, if called upon. I have in mind a very good friend of mine, Prof. Erwin Jahn of Concordia Teachers Seminary, as I think he would be an ideal man for this place. What do you think of him? If, however, we could not get him I should like very to get a Winfield boy, of this year

Description Letter from Frank Frazier to Professor Theodore Graebner inquiring about an open position for Assistant Pastor in Norfolk, Nebraska. Frazier asked Graebner if he had any suggestions for the position. Following World War I, anti-German sentiments rose across the county. Several states passed legislation forbidding the teaching of German in both public and private schools. The Lutheran Church was divided by the conflict on conducting services and religious instruction in German.
