E.C. Schutt letter - n.d.

Transcript

Enough of this. Today the Lutheran pastors together with the Evangelical, Methodist, and Catholic of German or part German congregations have been summoned before the Grand Jury which was to investigate the acts of violence, and told that the conditions were found to be very serious. We were instructed to put the matter before our congregations and tell them to eliminate the German language in our schools and have German preaching not oftener than twice a month. On Wednesday next week we are to have a meeting with the leading spirits of the terrorists for the purpose of effecting a compromise. Great, indeed, is the world which has been made safe for democracy. Peaceful citizens must surrender their legal rights, deliver the sacred laws into the hands of the mob to be trampled upon and all this passes for hundred percent Americanism. With kindest greetings, I am, Yours very sincerely, E. C. Schutt.
