Marching in the St Mihiel salient - September 13, 1918

I682-S8 WITH THE RAINBOW DIVISION IN FRANCE STREAMS OF YANKS IN OLIVE DRAB pouring into the St. Mihiel salient, pressing close after the retreating Boche. Montsec, the formidable fortified hill which fell into American hands in the course of the first day of the assault, shows in the background. The column in the foreground is an American Third Division Machinegun company. In the background are the wagons of the 166th Supply Train of the 42nd ("Rainbow") Division. The scene is St. Baussant, which early in the first day of the assault had been captured by Rainbow Division doughboys. (September 13, 1918)

This photograph of 42nd Division soldiers marching in the St. Mihiel salient, in September 13, 1918, is one of several Signal Corps photographs in a collection compiled by Ruby Garrett. Garrett, a Kanas City lawyer, served as Chief Signal Officer of the 117th Field Signal Battalion, 42nd Division, during World War I.
