[August] 17, 1918 Dear Mother Your letter received and Iwas glad to get it was beginning to think my letter to you had gone astray. Why didn’t you keep the extra five I gave you that’s what I intended - in fact Ihad forgotten all about it. Never the less since you couldnt use it Ican - so Thanks got vacinated this morning and a shot of anti typhoid serum so Iam not feeling any too good. The reaction tho doesn’t last long. This marching isnt half bad - after the first day or two but it sure take all the fat off

I weigh about 12 pounds less than Idid when I left Silver City yet I feel better or did until I took the serum but I’d rather feel rotten a few day than to have typhoid fever. Iam using a pencil as my pen is dry. any way it hasnt worked very good for some time. Better send Bill to Omaha oftenr he does better than the rest of us do when we go down. Take that $75 and give me credit for that on the note I owe you - If Iam not mistaken that leaves only - $125\00 Is that correct? Itook out $10,000\00 life

insurance and had the paper sent to you so they’ll be coming along some day be sure and take good care of them for you might be able to use that money if you get the chance to collect on it. Everything is going nicely here - and Ihope you all are feeling as well as I am - and have as much to eat. All we do here is drill and go to lecture then drill some more - then eat and drill some more and some more and some more - more more more - That is really a good description of our daily routine - so if you get that picture you have the whole thing
