July 20, 1918 Kind President: Mr. Wilson I though as Virgil Moss Lewis recieved a card classing him from 3 to 1 I would write to you for an exemption I am a poor widow woman no body to stay with me or do anything for me but Virgil isn8 stout full of arcypolis. I have a little home he raises tobaco & corn. Mr. Wilson for God sake & mine exempt my boy he is igorant cant read nor write he cant stand the training he would not know a german from no boddy else please never call him

Description In this letter to President Wilson, the author asked for an exemption for Virgil Moss Lewis. This document is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I.
