Letter to Lieutenant J. Berry King from James R. Page - July 15, 1918
Transcript
Copy July 15, 1918. Lieutenant J. Berry King, University Club, Washington, D.C. Dear Berry: I have wired Mr. Baity that I will be in Washington not later than the 29th ready to go to France, which he says will be within a few days after my arrival there. If I could do any good by being in Washington I of course could get there before the 29th. I understand that Governor Gardner has written a letter to General Crowder endorsing me, but it seems as though the letters are not getting to General Crowder as the receipt of the last letters that have gone up there have been acknowledged by some one else. Mr. John T. Wayland, who is managing the War Savings Stamp campaign here and who is a personal friend of General Crowder wrote him a letter and he called me up this morning and said that he has a letter from General Crowder about another matter but that his letters to him in regard to me had been answered by some one else so I am coming on to Washington ready to go to France and if there is no chance of getting this appointment I am going over in the other capacity, but I do hate like the devil to go as a civilian. Sincerely yours, (Signed) James R. Page. JRP/rr
