Okmulgee [Oklahoma February] 2nd 1918 Gen E H Crowder Provost Marshal General Washington D C My Dear General: I received the copy of your report to the Secretary of War with your autograph signature and I desire to thank you very much for it and to assure you that it will always be one of my valued possessions, not only as a great war document but because of your connection with it and Col. Hugh Johnsons connection with you and the Provost Marshal Generals office. I certainly congratulate you General as the head of this great branch of out national war service that you have so conducted that every citizen regards it with a feeling of pride. You have certainly made history in your department and elevated your office to a position that it has never had before as one of the great departments of our government and you have certainly discharged in full measure that debt that every citizen owes to his country. Again thanking you and assuring you that Mrs Johnson shares with me every feeling expressed in this letter I remain Very truly yours S.L. Johnson

Description In this letter, S.L. Johnson wrote the Provost Marshal General Enoch H. Crowder and thanked him for the autographed copy of his report to the Secretary of War and congratulated him on his work. This document is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I.
