7/18/[1918] My Dear general When my boy comes back if missing an arm or otherwise showing honorable service I tell you plainly I will shoot every major and officer of the swivel chair and inspection shops.I meet They should wear civilian clothes with suitable arm stripes why a major on my street would die of fright if he heard a gun go off

I mean it Its an impudent slander and imposition Think of a man a second lieutenant on the top with arm off coming home and being looked down on by one of these- Ha. There will be hell to pay. This document is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I. |
