August 25, 1918. General E. H. Crowder, Washington, D.C. My Dear General: Your kindly appreciation of my Atlantic article has given me a great deal of pleasure. It has been tucked carefully away to become an heirloom, together with the note from Secretary Baker. Frankly, I am as proud of it as any soldier could be who has been decorated on the field of battle. Thank you for it. You speak of the democracy of the draft. Believe me, dear General, you have not gone too far in that regard. In fact, it is my humble opinion that the wonderful success of your whole draft system is due in large measure to that one fact that the draft has been kept strictly a civilian affair. Whatever of military organization and effectiveness has been lost is over-balanced ten-fold by the preservation of a people

[page 2] General Crowder. Happily, we of the present draft boards need fear no such dreary repute, thanks to a just and intelligent direction of a scientifically equitable system. I refer to your own able administration. Forgive me for growing lengthy. It is rarely indeed that a private in the ranks has occasion or opportunity to address his corps commander. Again thanking you, I remain, Very Truly Yours, Gordon Snow P.S. In this morning
