Description Letter from the Governor of Missouri, Frederick D. Gardner, to General Enoch H. Crowder. Gardner stated how proud he and the state of Missouri were of him and included a newspaper clipping from the St. Louis Republic that discussed the Fourth of July celebration in General John J. Pershing's home town of Laclede. This document is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I.
