February 26, 1918 Personal. My dear General Crowder: Upon my return home, after an absence of a few days, I find your letter of February 14. I certainly appreciate, more than I shall ever be able to say, your continued interest in the Prairie Division. I am expecting great things from that Division, when it gets to the Front. I also thank you for sending me a copy of your letter to Mr. Denison. I think it is a complete and just analysis of the situation, and the facts and figures which it contains will be of great us to me here. I mad a speech the other day before the Congress of National Service, at Chicago, in which I took occasion to say in substance that I regarded the Selective Draft Law, and what has been accomplished under it, our outstanding achievement so far in this war. We have done nothing, which, in my opinion, augurs so well for a successful termination of this war, and so well for our entire future, as this achievement. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I. |
