Holland, Island, August 27/ [1918] Hon. E. H. Crowder: Dear Sir: I want to state my case to you if you will please be kind enough. I am a widow 53 not able to work and the two boards have taken my support. I am isolated on a small Island then miles from the main land and no way to go only in boat. They have taken my son and sent him to Camp Meed left to-day. Now please in the name of God please try and exemp him if you possably can for a broken hearted Mother

Description Letter from a widowed lady named Carrie F. Parks to General Enoch H. Crowder. She asked that her son, Henry McCory Parks, be exempted from the draft since he is her only caretaker. This document is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I.
