May 24 1918 My Dear General- I want to thank and also congratulate you on your action reported by the newspapers, to make a lot of worthless pool hall loafers gamblers & non-producing [m.s. illegibe: 1 wd] do something helpful or fight Good for you You will in so doing confer a blessing on every community & also should plan a blessing to the man thus forced to see his privilege & duty. I hear nothing but hearty commendation and approval of your action and I sincerely hope that local officials everywhere will see this is at once put in force I simply want to encourage you by thanking you. This document is part of a collection compiled by Enoch Herbert Crowder, the Edinburg, Grundy County, Missouri native who served as Judge Advocate General. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I. |
