Cushing, [Oklahoma] 6/23-[1918] Mr. Crowder Washington D.C. Dear Sir:- I am deeply in trouble and am writing you to see if you can be of any assistance to one who is deeply in need of assistance, My home is 8 miles east of Eufula [Oklahoma], and have had to leave my children, and break up my house account of my husband gambling and mistreating me and not providing for us. If I repromanded him for gambling and not providing for the family I was knoked down and beat around by him and he would threaten my life if I told it. So I ran away and am at My Sisters now. We have live together 20 years in [August] next.

and the last 5 years he has taken to gambling and mistreating me. Myself and Children have had to make the living and If we got anything above a bare existence, he would gamble it away. He is 42 years old, I am not asking you to take my word for this But am giving you the names of my Neighbors who know Circcumstances. Mr. J.D. Dorse, Sam Dorse, John Westbrook. Mr. Morgan Oghs, all the above get their mail at Eufula [Oklahoma] & John Carter, Jim Smith. Same address. They sugested me writing you, saying Such men should be in military Service and that you had made a ruling to that affect, So please Mr. Crowder if you can do anything of me, so I can be with my Children do so, I have worked hard to try to get along but the last 5 years has almost been starvation, Regarding my character Refer you to any one in Neighborhood. Crowder devised the Selective Service Act in 1917 which drafted America's forces during World War I. |
